<The Twin Cellists>

122 x 122 cm

Anne Koh finds much inspiration from the amazing talent and musical expressiveness she experiences in live classical concerts. The brilliant conductors conjuring life to the great symphonies and concertos radiate huge energy and expressions which she aspires to capture onto canvas.

Many of her paintings are of her twin nephews, both Australian cellists who have performed in many of the world’s prestigious venues. It is they who brought her to this wonderful world of music, and this new world is her focus and joy. The movements and emotions of the music she hears are captured through her colours and strokes. Her works are a mix of abstract, expressionism and Impressionism.

Anne hopes to share some of the beautiful and poignant moments through her paintings. Although it is visual art, in her mind it is ‘auditory art’. In recent times, the pandemic has ravaged her country, Malaysia. During these years of mayhem and suffering, her works have evolved into a blue period. Subconsciously in despondent moods, her choice of colours has moved away from vibrant and earthy colours.

The Ecstasy Of Gold, written by Ennio Morricone for the unforgettable movie, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The music is, of course, also unforgettable and its catchy tunes occupy one's mind for long spells. Anne Koh’s The Ecstasy Of Gold with its searing desert heat and gold colours in the background, captures the ecstasy of the musicians’ performance. Koh was introduced to this piece of music through her eldest brother when she was 8 years old. Koh’s memory of her late brother during this part of her life gave her the strong urge to put her emotions down on canvas. Her big bold strokes are applied freely in this work of mixed mediums. If you look carefully, do not be surprised to see the lost gold coins in the background.

By continuous working on nature sketching, Qigong and spiritual study, I realised the mysterious cosmic energy and the endless living power of Nature. Before every painting session, I relax and free my mind just like meditation. Then Qi will lead me to move the brush along the painting process. After it stopped automatically, I would add in colours or tones to balance and emphasize for finishing off. My paintings are just the record of that instant moment. Viewers may interpret them their own way according to their perception.
